I went to the Bears game last night and, while I enjoyed it very much, I couldn't help but look out into the crowd of orange and blue and think about bread and circuses.
According to Wikipedia, it is Latin (panem et circenses): An ancient Roman metaphor for people choosing food and fun over freedom. It often appears in commentary that accuses people of giving up their civic duty and following whichever political leader offers to satisfy their decadent desires.
Biggest financial meltdown since the recession and we're screaming at the Eagles.

Hey Hedy -
Let’s face it...if the Chicago Bear’s are winning and Lovie decides to run for President...he could win by a landslide!
Bears’ fans would care less if he is qualified to run this country or not...as long as...
Bears’ Win! Bears’ Win!
it’s a sin
I haven't heard that expression before. I'll have to remember it.
Still, isn't it so beautifully and uniquely human. Bread and amusement solves the immediate and personal need. The priority one stuff. That other stuff, the financial crisis, the war, the whatever, it's so big. How can anything I do have any impact at all.
Besides, how bad can it be? My family is well fed and we have a lovely football game/american idol episode to watch...
I obviously meant "Bears' fans COULD NOT care less".....I now stand corrected.
affected
After listening to NPR this morning (recounting a recent attack by Al-Quida forces against the American Embassy in Yemen), my twelve year old son wistfully suggested that what we really need to overcome such current devastating circumstances (i.e., terriorist attacks, major Wall Street meltdowns, etc.) would be a nice, full-scale alien invasion to unite our world against a common enemy.
But my cynical little self said that that would be great (cause we all loved Independence Day, right!), except after blowing up the mother ship, we'd all be back to blowing each other up once again.
Because in the end ... nothing really changes.
I'm really worried about this financial meltdown.
I'm petrified it's gonna destroy these porn sites!
What if I actually have to go outside and play again?
Very disturbing
